Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if I'm registered to vote?
Select your state from the dropdown above and click "Check Registration." This will take you directly to your state's official voter registration lookup tool, hosted by your state's Secretary of State or Board of Elections. You will typically need to provide your name, date of birth, and either your address or a government-issued ID number.
What if my name doesn't appear in the lookup?
If your name does not appear, it may mean you are not registered, your registration was cancelled due to inactivity or a returned mail notice, or there was a data entry error. If you believe you should be registered, contact your county clerk or local election office immediately — especially if an election is approaching. Most states allow you to re-register online at vote.gov.
When is the voter registration deadline?
Deadlines vary by state. Most states require registration 15–30 days before the election. Some states — including California, Colorado, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and others — allow same-day voter registration. North Dakota has no voter registration requirement at all. Always check your state's official elections website for the current deadline.
Does this site collect my personal information?
No. This page is a simple directory of official state links. When you select your state and click the link, you are taken directly to your state government's website — we are not involved in any data exchange. SF Open Voting does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information through this tool.
Why does SF Open Voting support voter registration access?
SF Open Voting is committed to transparent, accessible, and auditable elections. Part of that mission includes helping every eligible citizen participate — and that starts with knowing whether you are registered. We believe that barriers to participation undermine democratic legitimacy just as surely as insecure voting systems do.
